When riding in a group, communication is vital. Audio communication is typically not available to every rider, so several hands signals are used to communicate information while the group is moving. When you see a rider ahead of you use a hand signal, you should do the same to communicate to riders behind you.
Normal Formation: The lead Road Captain rides in the left third of the lane, while the next rider rides in the right third of the lane. Allow 1 second to the rider diagonal to you and 2 seconds to the rider directly in front of you. The rest of the group follows this staggered formation.
Single File: Riders are lined-up one behind the other. This is usually done if there is some obstacle preventing staggered file riding.
Double File: Often seen when bikes are riding slowly, such as in a parade.
Stopped: Pull up completely to be alongside the next you were following. Do not leave large gaps, as is takes up much more space and can causes delays when the group starts riding again.
If the group needs to re-form its staggered formation, do so by moving into the vacant left or right lane position. We do not pass another rider in the column.
